Through this course, I have learned that successful reading is performed by using many skills and strategies. Taking this class, I also think I am able to be better for reading than before. For example, in order to get succeed in reading tasks like ‘answer the question’ and ‘Korean SAT’, I know I need intensive reading skills in that kind of reading tasks. Besides, extensive reading skills make a reader have lots of chance to read, so that the reader can develop their schema.
Most Korean high school students including me have to do with KSAT(수능). They should study the English language in order to achieve high score in English test. Even after they graduate high school, they have not to stop their English studying because a number of companies in Korea require applicants to have high level in TOEIC, In these circumstances, as an English teacher in the future, I would like to recommend that students should be aware of reading skills and use them in their reading. Since I did not know how to read effectively, I sometimes had problem in English reading. For example, when doing KSAT, I often felt lack of time, and failed to complete my task. If I had been familar with the skills such as intensive reading, I could have been successful in KSAT. Intensive reading helps readers to read sentence by sentence and see details. It can be a big help in ‘answer the question’ task. Also, Through reading precisely, I would be able to learn grammatical rules and structures that are used in KSAT frequently. The main strength of intensive reading is that it focuses on language features such as vocabularies and grammar, so that readers can improve their comprehension. seeing details in text appropriates to KSAT. Furthermore, concreting reading strategy creates another his/her own skill fit to reading tasks.
Of course, some teachers have been teaching these kind of reading skills. on the contrary, rest of them might have difficult in reading. It is fact that KSAT have students focus on problem-solving reading and seeing details in text, so we need to tell students and let them get used to be the skill. I know this skill cannot be perfect by itself, but I think it is necessary for student who live in Korea and who will take KSAT at least.
