How to help my brother to enjoy English reading?
Some parents living in Korea may well know how important learning English is to their children. I have also seen a lot of parents who hope their children to learn English and to be even frequent in English. They send their sons and daughters to Hakwon, even if their children do not want to go there. The point what I would like to say is here, "parents should not force their sons and daughters to study English when they are younger and have no interest in English."
English is a communication tool unlike mathematics and science, so it has to be learned by different way. Surely, Student having interest in learning English are more likely to learn, and it applies to other subjects. Then, what is the different between learning English and learning any other subject? The answer is that English learning can be an 'interpersonal activity.' What is 'interpersonal activity'? Unlike mathematics that requires students to try to find out one right answer by themselves, English has no one right answer and it requires students to communicate with other person saying what they want to tell their friends. Also, as it has no right answers, each student can share his or her opinions freely. Although your students are not participate in communication activity, do not worry about that. The reason is that just listening to other students is also one way to learn English. Whatever your sons and daughters do, it can be a learning activity as long as they are in English-speaking environment. That is interpersonal activity.
Are you worrying about your kid who did not read in English yet? Do not worry anymore. Why don't you read in English instead him? How about telling him interesting story about heroes he likes. You do not have to make your kid understand your all inputs. He is just nine years old. He will hate to read so many English words or to memorize them. Instead using phonics workbook, you can use other tools. Cartoon is one of the tools you can use. Guessing 'story's ending' and feeling 'what would it be if I were a hero!' are more flexible and easy to learn English. You are also able to teach him English words and sounds by sharing opinions with your kid using English words. Here is an example that I will show you, " Hey, Suzi will be staying here alone, because her mother will not here until her father say her sorry." "If I were a Suzi, I would cry out!", "How about you? you will be scared? happy? because you are able to do anything you want without me?"
It will takes more time than just giving a workbook to him. You may spend more time with your kid. However, your kid, nine years old boy, will not listen to you and will not try to complete the worksheet. Interesting comes easily from what people are good at. In order to make your kid be interest in English reading, put him into English-speaking environment he can really enjoy. Then, the more he gets interest and catches meaning of words, the more he will spend time on reading, and finally, he will get better.
